Canadian Poutine - tasty snack of chips (fries), cheese and gravy

What's The Big Idea?

Chips & gravy. With a cheesy twist. It's really that simple. You can of course make your own chips (fries) from scratch, use frozen ones, or buy them in from your local chippie.

There are a number of variations on the dish. Traditionally it would use fresh cheese curds, but recipes exist using feta cheese, grated cheddar or mozarella. There are also versions which add small amounts of chopped bacon, chicken or smoked sausage.

Shopping List

Here's the list of what you need for the basic version:

  • 4 portions of chips (fries)
  • 1 handful of shredded or grated cheese (see above) per portion
  • 1 pint gravy, made from ideally a mixture of chicken and beef stock

What To Do

  • Cook your fries, either from scratch or as directed on the packet if using frozen chips...or pop to the chippie and buy some
  • Distribute the fries/chips evenly on 4 plates
  • Meanwhile, heat the gravy
  • Sprinkle each portion of chips with cheese
  • Pour gravy over each portion, and enjoy!
