Ecuadorian Grilled Steak Meal - Churrasco

What's the big idea?

Churrasco is a very popular meal in Ecuador, especially in the coastal region. It is one of those meals where "the sum of the parts is greater than the whole" or whatever the saying is. In the same way that an English Fried Breakfast isn't anything special when you look at the list of ingredients, but takes on an identity of its own when they are all combined, Churrasco looks at first glance like steak and chips with a few extra trimmings, but it is the combination of all the elements which makes this meal so close to the Ecuadorians' hearts.

Cook your steaks as described below, and serve with all of the following:

  • Chips/Fries
  • Fried sliced plaintains or green bananas
  • Boiled rice
  • A fried egg on top of each steak
  • A simple salsa made from chopped tomatoes, red onions and fresh coriander (cilantro)
  • A simple side salad of chopped lettuce and cucumber
  • Sliced avocado
  • Spicy sauce - Tabasco will do, or the nearest equivalent to the Ecuadorian dish might be something like Colombian Hot Sauce - Aji Picante

Remember to allow marination time.

Shopping List

Here's the list of what you need (in addition to the above accompaniements):

  • 2lb thin beef steaks
  • 6-8 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • Salt and pepper

What To Do

  • Mix the garlic, cumin, salt and pepper together with a little water to make a marinade for the meat
  • Rub this marinade into the steaks and leave to marinate for a couple of hours
  • Grill the steaks until cooked to your liking
  • Serve the steaks with a fried egg on top and accompanied by all the trimmings (see above)
