Birmingham Brummie Breakfast Cake

What's the big idea?

For those who don't know, "Brummie" is a slang word used to describe someone or something from Birmingham.

Not a sweet cake, but a savoury one. Traditionally served with eggs and baked beans for a filling breakfast, you could serve it as an accompaniement to almost any savoury dish but it is really good with eggs....

Shopping List

Here's the list of what you need:

  • 3oz streaky bacon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 8oz self-raising flour
  • 1oz butter, chopped into small pieces
  • 5 fl oz milk
  • 1 tablespoon tomato ketchup
  • Dash of Worcestershire Sauce
  • 3oz cheddar cheese, grated

What To Do

  • Fry or grill the bacon until crispy. Cut into small pieces and set aside
  • Pre-heat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6
  • Mix the salt with the flour in a large bowl
  • Rub in the butter using your fingertips until well blended
  • Mix the milk, ketchup, and Worcestershire Sauce into the dry ingredients, and then mix in the bacon and approximately one third of the cheese
  • Mix well to form a dough
  • Scatter flour over a flat surface and roll the dough in the flour to form a ball. Roll this out into a circle of about 7 inches (18cm) in diameter
  • Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top
  • Grease a baking tray amd place the Brummie Cake on it. Place in the oven and bake for 30 minutes until golden brown
  • Remove from the oven, cut into four portions and serve immediately
