German Meatballs

What's the big idea?

Meatballs are popular throughout Germany. This is a basic recipe for the meatballs themselves, and does not include a sauce. You can either serve as they are, without any sauce, or serve with a sauce of your choice poured over the meatballs.

Shopping List

Here's the list of what you need:

  • 2 small bread rolls
  • ¼ pint milk
  • 1lb lean minced beef or pork
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 2 slices bread, made into breadcrumbs
  • Salt and pepper
  • ½ teaspoon dried mixed herbs
  • Vegetable oil

What To Do

  • Place the bread rolls in a bowl with the milk. Cover and leave for half an hour
  • Meanwhile put the minced meat into a separate mixing bowl. Mix in the chopped onion and season with a little salt and pepper
  • Add the egg, mix well and then knead the mixture with your fingers, or use an electric blender
  • Remove the bread rolls from the bowl and squeeze out the milk. Cut or tear into small pieces
  • Add to the meatball mixture, along with the mixed herbs, and knead again to make sure that everything is thoroughly mixed
  • Take tablespoonfuls of the meatball mixture and shape it into balls with your hands
  • Roll each ball in breadcrumbs until well coated. Flatten them slightly with your hands
  • Heat some vegetable oil (start with 2 tablespoons, but you may need to add more if they stick) in a frying pan
  • Fry the meatballs on both sides until golden brown and cooked through
